Background & Objectives

On New Year’s Eve, we were contacted by an engineering contractor supporting The Priory Hospital, a specialist mental health hospital in Newbury. The hospital operates multiple inpatient wards and provides 24/7 care for vulnerable residents, where continuity of services is critical to patient wellbeing, clinical standards, and operational safety.

A sudden failure had left the site without hot water, creating immediate risks across hygiene, infection control, catering, and personal care. With residents on site, limited fallback options and the challenge of it being a public holiday period, Rapid Energy were called to reinstate a safe, reliable hot water supply as quickly as possible, with minimal disruption to care delivery.

160kW Slimline Oil Boiler

Equipment Used

To deliver a robust and site-specific solution, we supplied a temporary boiler hire package, including:

Challenges

The situation presented several time-critical obstacles:

  • Holiday logistics: Haulage availability was severely restricted due to the Christmas and New Year shutdown.

  • Operational sensitivity: Vulnerable residents remained on site throughout, leaving no tolerance for prolonged downtime.

  • On-site complication: Upon arrival, an issue was identified with the existing cold water main, threatening further delays while waiting for third-party attendance.

Each challenge required decisive action to keep the project moving forward.

Emergency Hot Water Restoration Challenges for a Healthcare Facility

Strategy

Rapid Energy responded immediately. A full quotation was issued within 15 minutes of the initial call, allowing approvals to be secured without delay. Once authorised, we arranged transport and labour for a New Year’s Day delivery and installation, overcoming limited holiday availability.

Our engineers mobilised early, meeting the haulage team on site at 8:00am. When the cold water main issue emerged, rather than waiting over an hour for external support, our engineer resolved the problem directly, preventing extended downtime and keeping the installation on schedule.

Clear communication remained a priority throughout, with regular updates provided to ensure confidence and transparency at every stage.

What could have escalated into a serious clinical and reputational issue was resolved swiftly through fast decision-making, experienced engineers, and a partner prepared to act when it mattered most. This project demonstrates how Rapid Energy supports healthcare environments under pressure, delivering dependable temperature control hire solutions when reliability is non-negotiable.

When your operation can’t afford downtime, Rapid Energy is ready to step in.

Customer Quote

“On the 31st December, we had a boiler go down at a mental health hospital that we look after. Unfortunately, the boiler was beyond repair, so were in desperate need of a temporary boiler get site back up and running.

We spoke with Stephen at Rapid and had a quote back within 15 minutes. We proceeded to order the temporary boiler and Rapid lived up to the name and had a temporary boiler and oil storage tank onsite and set up before 11am the next day (New Years day!). The commissioning engineer who attended also repaired an issue with the cold water supply that was needed to fill the primary. Can’t recommend the team at Rapid enough! Fortunately, we don’t need them often, but when we do they always deliver exceptional service.
