Urgent Cooling Solution for London University Office Block

Project Background

A leading London university experienced a critical cooling failure in one of its office buildings. The existing chillers had been out of operation for an extended period, leaving the building without reliable temperature control.

As summer approached, internal temperatures continued to rise, impacting the comfort and productivity of students and lecturers. With the situation becoming increasingly urgent, they turned to Rapid Energy for a fast, dependable cooling hire solution.

Equipment Deployed

To deliver this temporary cooling hire solution, the following equipment was deployed:

3 x 150kW Chillers
100m of 4″ Bauered rubber hose
1 x manifold
3 x 125A 3-phase, 25m extension leads

Challenges

The permanent chiller system had been non-operational for a prolonged period, requiring a temporary hire solution that could integrate seamlessly.
A tight turnaround was required, with less than one week to restore cooling before temperatures escalated further.
Limited rooftop space restricted equipment placement, requiring an alternative installation strategy.
Power supply requirements needed rapid coordination with on-site electricians to support the hired equipment.

Challenges for Temporary Chiller at London University Office Block

Our Solution

Conducted a next-day site visit to assess requirements and design a tailored cooling hire solution aligned with the building’s existing system.
Recommended and deployed three high-capacity chiller hire units connected via a shared manifold to ensure reliability and consistent performance.
Selected a ground-level installation location to overcome rooftop space constraints while maintaining efficient system integration.
Coordinated closely with the client’s electrical team to ensure suitable 125A three-phase power supplies were prepared in advance.
Delivered and installed all rental equipment within 24 hours, with full commissioning completed on the same day to minimise disruption.

Outcome

Cooling was restored rapidly, reducing internal temperatures from 26°C to a comfortable 20°C within the same day of installation. The university was able to maintain a productive and comfortable environment for staff and students without interruption.

Impressed by the speed, reliability, and performance of the solution, the client extended the hire period from 12 to 20 weeks and is now planning future seasonal cooling hire with Rapid Energy. This project reinforced our role as a trusted partner when fast, effective temperature control is critical.
