Late on a Friday evening, an air conditioning contractor contacted Rapid Energy regarding an urgent situation at Osler Diagnostics, a pioneering biomedical company headquartered in Oxford, England. Osler, founded in 2017 as a spin-out from the University of Oxford, specialises in developing portable diagnostic devices.
Inside Osler’s laboratory, maintaining a stable environment is critical to preserving the integrity of research and preventing damage to irreplaceable samples. Consequently, when the central HVAC system failed, the threat to ongoing experiments became both immediate and severe.
The AC contractor responsible for the laboratory had already reached out to several providers, with no success. With time running out and no viable solution in sight, they needed a rapid, effective cooling system delivered and operational by the next day. That’s when they turned to Rapid Energy.
To support the contractor’s urgent request, we supplied:
1 x 50L evaporative cooler
These specific models were selected for their ability to maintain effective cooling in sealed environments, without requiring external exhaust or ventilation, crucial for Osler’s unique lab setting.
This project posed a unique set of challenges:
Time Constraints: The emergency call came late on a Friday, outside most suppliers’ and couriers’ business hours, leaving little time to coordinate logistics or confirm stock availability.
Technical Requirements: The client needed specific cooling targets to be met in an enclosed, non-ventilated lab space. Most standard evaporative cooling solutions rely on airflow or exhaust, neither of which was available.
Access & Communication: The client was under significant stress and had limited technical information on hand. Extracting the necessary data to engineer a solution required quick thinking and clear communication.
Delivery Logistics: A next-day (Saturday) delivery of specialised equipment required exceptional coordination with warehousing and courier services, many of which were closed or operating limited hours.
To protect Osler’s operations, Rapid Energy took fast, decisive action:
Immediately gathered critical information from the contractor, including room dimensions, temperature targets, and space constraints.
Quickly identified the appropriate equipment, selecting evaporative coolers specifically designed to perform effectively in sealed laboratory environments without the need for external ventilation.
Leveraged trusted supplier relationships to secure the required units late on a Friday evening.
Coordinated a rare Saturday delivery, using priority courier services outside of regular operations.
Expedited client onboarding, fast-tracking Osler Diagnostics’ account setup to ensure no administrative delays would block the response.
Provided technical guidance to the contractor to ensure seamless on-site setup upon delivery.
By Saturday morning, the equipment was delivered and installed, successfully restoring temperature control in Osler’s lab. The contractor’s swift action, backed by Rapid Energy’s speed and expertise, prevented critical research disruption and any financial losses associated.
While other providers were unable to respond in time, our rapid response and dependable expertise enabled the contractor to protect critical operations with no downtime. This highlights the importance of effective communication, quick decision-making, and strategic partnerships in emergency situations when failure is not an option.
When the call came through late on a Friday night, I could immediately tell this wasn’t a standard job. The lab team was in a panic; their cooling system had completely failed, and they were facing a potential disaster in a temperature-sensitive environment with no windows, no ventilation, and no time to spare.
I knew we had to move fast. Within minutes, I gathered the technical specs, assessed what was needed, and sourced the right evaporative cooling solution that could perform under those unique conditions. Even though most companies were winding down for the weekend, I worked through the night to coordinate a Saturday delivery, set up a new client account, and make sure the lab had everything they needed to stabilise the situation.
It’s moments like these that really show what Rapid Energy is all about- acting quickly, thinking on our feet, and delivering when others can’t. I’m proud we could step in when no one else could, and even prouder that we helped prevent serious disruption to critical research.
