Standing at 310 meters and comprising 95 stories, The Shard is the tallest building in the UK and Western Europe. Completed in 2012, it has been a prominent part of London’s skyline for over 12 years. Inside, the building houses offices, restaurants, a hotel, luxury apartments, and a public viewing gallery, which offers stunning panoramic views of the city.
A critical maintenance task required shutting off parts of the building’s heating system. However, maintaining uninterrupted hot water service for the building’s varied occupants was essential to avoid significant financial penalties associated with downtime.
This is where Rapid Energy assisted by providing a temporary hot water solution. The primary objective was to reliably supply two 2,000L calorifiers on the 29th floor while seamlessly integrating with the building management system (BMS) to handle demand fluctuations.
Rapid Energy successfully designed, installed and commissioned this electric heating and hot water solution within one week. The system operated continuously for two months during maintenance work, ensuring uninterrupted service to The Shard’s occupants. Through our assistance, we were able to keep businesses operating in the 95-story building operational. This showcases Rapid Energy’s expertise in delivering high-capacity, specialist temporary electric heating solutions in complex environments.
“This project highlights our expertise in delivering highly specialised HVAC hire solutions for complex and high-stakes applications. The financial risks associated with this project meant that failure was not an option, as any disruptions could have resulted in significant exposure for our client.
Rapid Energy was selected due to our proven track record in successfully executing similar technically advanced hire solutions, providing the client with confidence in our ability to deliver a reliable and effective outcome.”
