Project Background

A local authority school in the Midlands faced a major disruption after an underground gas leak forced the incoming gas supply to be isolated across the site.

Working on behalf of the local council, the client’s M&E contractor needed an urgent temporary boiler hire solution to restore heating and hot water. With four separate plant rooms serving different areas of the school, the solution needed to be fast, scalable, and carefully engineered to maintain continuity across the entire site.

Equipment supplied

To deliver reliable temporary heating and hot water across the school, Rapid Energy supplied:

  • 1 × 2MW packaged boiler
  • 2 × 300kW packaged boilers
  • 1 × 100kW packaged boiler
  • 1 × HWS plate heat exchanger
  • 1 × Three-phase 63A commando lead (25m)
  • 3 × Single-phase 16A commando leads (10m)
  • 10 × 2” Camlock 16 Bar rated hoses (10m lengths)
  • 10 × 4” Camlock 16 Bar rated hoses (10m lengths)
  • 3 × 2” FDA-approved hot water hoses (10m lengths)
  • 1 × 9000L bunded fuel tank
  • 3 × 3000L bunded fuel tanks

Challenges

  • The school required heating and hot water to be reinstated before students returned from half-term.
  • Four separate plant rooms across the site required independent temporary boiler connections.
  • The main plant room had no isolated connection points available on the existing header system.
  • The canteen hot water system also lacked suitable temporary connection points.
  • The project needed to be completed within an extremely tight timeframe to avoid disruption to the school’s operations and reputation.

Our Solution

  • Conducted an on-site assessment the morning after the initial enquiry to review the existing plant setup and determine capacity requirements.
  • Deployed a 2MW packaged boiler hire unit to support the school’s main heating network.
  • Installed two additional 300kW temporary boilers to serve separate blocks not connected to the main plant room.
  • Provided a dedicated 100kW boiler and HWS plate heat exchanger to restore canteen hot water services.
  • Carried out enabling works to create temporary connection points where existing infrastructure was unsuitable.
  • Installed a remote monitoring system to track temperatures and fuel usage throughout the hire period.
  • Completed installation, commissioning, and operational sign-off within a 72-hour timeframe.
