Background and Objective

Earlsdon Park Retirement Village, situated in Coventry, West Midlands, is a vibrant community designed for residents aged 55 and over. Home to over 350 individuals across 322 apartments, the village offers a range of amenities, including a bistro, library, gym, and salon, fostering an environment of comfort and social engagement.

During a particularly harsh winter, the village’s bistro, an essential communal space for dining and social interaction, faced an unexpected heating system failure. Recognising the urgency to maintain a warm and safe environment for the elderly residents, a mechanical and electrical (M&E) company overseeing the facility’s maintenance sought an immediate temporary heating solution to bridge the gap until permanent repairs could be completed. Equipment Used

To swiftly address the heating needs of the bistro, the following equipment was deployed:

  • 4 x 3kW single air flow electric heaters: Selected for their efficiency and capacity to provide rapid warmth suitable for the bistro’s size.

  • 4 x RCD (Residual Current Device) plugs: Ensured electrical safety by protecting against potential faults and leaks.

  • 4 x Heater guards: Implemented to prevent accidental contact with heating units, prioritizing resident safety.

Challenges

The primary challenge was the immediacy of the situation. With the bistro’s heating system out of commission during cold weather, there was a pressing need to implement a solution that would allow the space to remain operational and comfortable for residents. The solution required not only prompt delivery but also adherence to safety standards to protect the well-being of the elderly occupants.
