Background & Objectives

An anaerobic digestion facility is a plant that converts organic waste, such as food or agricultural by-products, into renewable energy through a natural, oxygen-free process. Because of its importance in producing sustainable power and supporting local energy networks, maintaining consistent operational conditions is critical.

When a major anaerobic digestion facility in Somerset experienced a sudden chiller failure, their on-site operations faced immediate risk. The existing cooling system, a CIAT-manufactured chiller, suffered an unexpected malfunction, and replacement parts were delayed indefinitely.

With critical temperature control at stake and production continuity on the line, the client needed a reliable, immediate temporary chiller to restore cooling capacity, and they needed it fast. That’s when they called Rapid Energy.

50kW Chiller Hire

Equipment Used

To deliver the required cooling capacity and ensure seamless integration with the existing system, Rapid Energy supplied and installed the following equipment:

  • 1 x 50kW Chiller

  • 2 x 2” 10m HTG Hoses (Camlock fittings)

  • 1 x 2” BSP to 1¼” BSP Reducer

  • 1 x 2” HTG Camlock to Male BSP Adaptor Set (1 x Male & 1 x Female)

  • 1 x 415v 63Amp 3-Phase Power Lead (10m)

All equipment was selected for durability, compatibility, and rapid deployment to restore essential cooling.

Challenges

The site itself presented no major logistical barriers, but the urgency and technical complexity of the situation demanded precise, fast action.

Key challenges included:

  • Urgent turnaround: The failed chiller created immediate operational risk, requiring a same-day response.

  • Critical process dependency: Stable cooling was essential for maintaining ongoing production.

  • Specialist system constraints: Due to the specialist nature of the CIAT unit, timelines for a permanent replacement were uncertain, increasing pressure to restore operational conditions fast.

Strategy & Implementation

  • Within hours of the initial call, our technical team conducted a site assessment to determine the most effective temporary cooling solution.
  • A 50kW temporary chiller was dispatched immediately, with Rapid Energy engineer Jake Bonser leading the installation and commissioning.
  • The system was connected, tested, and fully operational on the same day of installation, restoring critical cooling within 24 hours of the initial enquiry.

Outcome

The temporary chiller system quickly stabilised on-site temperatures, allowing the facility to resume full operations with minimal downtime and no product loss.

By delivering a fully engineered, plug-and-play solution under tight time constraints, Rapid Energy ensured business continuity and peace of mind when it mattered most.

This project highlights Rapid Energy’s core strengths – responsiveness, reliability, and results, helping clients move from operational jeopardy to operational confidence.
