The Objective

We received a call from an M&E client who required a solution to reinstate heating services to a mental health facility managed by the NHS. They had experienced multiple breakdowns with their boilers, so a decision had been made to take the boilers offline and install a temporary boiler. This gave them additional time to design and upgrade the permanent plant room.

Rapid Energy recommended a scope of works to determine the best temporary boiler solution for the client, so a survey was subsequently booked in.

150kW Packaged Boiler

Temporary Boiler & Equipment

  • 1 x 150kW Gas Fired Boiler
  • 20m of 2″ Heating Hose
  • 10m of Gas Tracpipe
  • 1 x 25m Single Phase 16amp Lead
  • Adaptor DN65 to DN50
  • Heras Fencing

Challenges

Following the survey, a packaged 150kW gas fired solution was proposed. Connection points were already available with isolation on the primary heating pipework, and the gas could be isolated and disconnected at the back of the existing boiler, allowing gas Tracpipe to be installed and extended outside to connect into the temporary packaged unit.

Another consideration was the location of the temporary boiler. It was imperative that the temporary boiler was enclosed to prevent patient access. Our packaged boilers are housed within secure steel containers, so this was not an issue, and Heras fencing was also supplied to provide additional security around the boiler.

Installation and location

Outcome

Upon instruction from the client, the equipment was loaded onto the HIAB. Once our engineers arrived onsite, they proceeded to isolate the permanent system utilising the existing isolation valves on the primary circuit. Our team then installed DN65 to DN50 reducers on the flow and return pipework, allowing us to connect our 2” heating hoses onto the hospital’s system.

Following the connection of the flow/return hoses, the gas supply was isolated and our 50mm gas Tracpipe connected and routed out to the temporary boiler, located directly outside the plant room. The gas was then purged to the burner and the engineers began the commissioning process. The temporary boiler was set to the required temperature of 80 degrees on the flow and the commissioning process was completed, delivering heat back into the building.

From the moment we were instructed, we took immediate action to meet the client’s needs. We delivered, installed and commissioned a temporary 150kW heating solution, taking the existing unreliable boilers offline. This allowed the hospital some time to plan for the existing boilers to be upgraded by our client.
