Background

In April, Rapid Energy was approached by a temporary structure company in urgent need of a reliable cooling solution for a major sporting event held in Europe. Their existing supply chain had fallen through, leaving them in need of a dependable provider to design, install, and maintain a temporary cooling system within a tight timeframe.

Rapid Energy's Successful Delivery of Temporary Cooling Solution for a Major Sporting Event in Europe

Rapid Response and Initial Assessment

Within days, our Sales Director and Technical HVAC Manager boarded a flight to Paris to survey the project and establish the technical and logistical requirements. We reviewed architectural and engineering plans for a temporary broadcasting centre that would host multiple media outlets. This setup required specific cooling and noise-level standards to ensure an optimal environment for live broadcasts.

20kW Fan Coil Unit

Equipment Deployed on Project

Our team installed an extensive cooling system comprising:

  • 51 fan coil units
  • 2 circulation pumps
  • 1 pressurisation unit
  • Flow and return manifolds
  • 2,200 metres of hose, fully lagged with Armaflex to prevent condensation
  • 102 pipe fittings, multiple T-connections, and valves
  • Six 4.1 kW portable air conditioning units for supplemental cooling

The system covered a total of 15 TV studios and was designed to connect seamlessly with the Fraícheur de Paris network.

Challenges Faced

Connection to District Cooling System: We were tasked with connecting our temporary cooling system to Fraícheur de Paris, the city’s district cooling network. Given our limited initial knowledge of this infrastructure, we conducted extensive research to ensure compliance and efficiency.

Noise Level Constraints: The broadcasting studios required noise levels lower than the industry average. To meet this specification, we used acoustic covers on all units, meticulously balancing performance and quiet operation.

Logistical and Permit Challenges: Work permits and visas needed rapid processing, given the compressed project timeline. In anticipation of potential delays, we started acquiring these permits in May, before the project was officially instructed in June. Additionally, with numerous contractors on-site completing various structural works, close collaboration and communication were critical to ensure seamless installation.

Installation and location

On-Site Support

During installation, the sporting committee requested that a Rapid Energy HVAC engineer be stationed on-site for the event’s duration to respond to any technical issues within 30 minutes. Rapid Energy arranged an on-site rota to ensure continuous support, allowing rapid responses to any technical issues. This minimised downtime risks and upheld the cooling system’s reliability throughout the event.

Planning and Project Management

Given the high stakes and time-sensitive nature of this project, meticulous planning was paramount. From verifying the equipment list to ensuring correct fittings and fixtures, our team left no room for error. As noted by Steve, Rapid Energy’s Sales Director;

“This project was a proud moment for Rapid Energy; our whole team came together to deliver the temporary cooling requirements under demanding circumstances.”
