Objective

We received a call from an existing M&E client, William Freer. They required a hot water solution to three separate student accommodation blocks due to their existing water heaters being condemned. The water heaters had been condemned due to issues with the flues, so with no hot water, emergency temporary provisions were required to bring the hot water back online into the buildings.

A site survey was arranged so that Rapid Energy’s technical team could investigate further and produce the optimal temporary boiler solution.

Installation

Following the survey, 6 No 15kW electric boilers and 3 No 30kW plate heat exchangers were specified to provide DHW into 3 individual builds. The existing water heaters worked alongside buffer vessels to cope increased hot water demand during peak demand i.e when students were showing in the mornings and evenings. The quickest method of connection was to isolate the existing water heaters and connect the electric boilers into the hot water pipework.

By doing this, Rapid Energy was able to use the existing hot water storage cylinder, giving the students hot water on demand. Each building was fed by 2 No 15kW electric boilers and 1 No 30kW plate heat exchanger, which worked alongside two buffer vessels, providing the additional storage. There were 3 buildings each with 30 rooms, including bathroom en-suite.

Single phase was the only power source available onsite, so this governed our proposed multiple 15kW electric boiler solution. One of the key benefits of our electric boilers is that they can be installed just about anywhere. They don’t expel waste gases so there’s no need for a flue.

Outcome

The customer was delighted with the temporary boiler installation which allowed some much needed breathing room whilst replacement units were sourced. He even commented on the improvement which has been made to hot water delivery into the buildings.
