Hailed as an inspiring and important example of modern architecture, after almost 25 years of constant use, the London Southbank Centre’s existing LTHW boilers were showing their age. With inefficiency and unreliability playing a key factor entering into winter, the decision was made to refurbish the plant room and install a CHP unit. Our client approached us to provide a temporary boiler solution to provide back up heating services whilst the main refurbishment took place during the winter period.
Rapid Energy arranged a site survey with the client. One of our experienced consultants attended the site to further understand requirements and propose a suitable temporary boiler solution.
Whilst onsite, we examined the existing plant room, which consisted of 4 x 500kW Viessmann boilers. 3 of the 4 boilers were beyond economical repair. The plant room replacement allowed for one boiler to remain in service, whilst the other 3 boilers were replaced with the CHP.
Because the buildings occupancy was low in certain blocks and empty in others, it meant that the kW capacity of the temporary boiler solution could come down significantly. Reducing both the hire and running costs for our client.
The main plant room fed multiple blocks on the complex. With the one 500kW boiler currently in operation, the delta T was at 65 degrees flow / 45 degrees return but was dropping entering into the winter. This needed to be increased to 80 degrees / 60 degrees. To ensure the temperature range was reached, and allowing for additional Kw capacity should temperatures drop further, Rapid Energy specified a 600kW boiler to be installed.
Following the client’s instruction, our equipment and engineers were deployed and the boiler was landed onsite within 16hrs after the the completed survey. Our engineers then connected a total of 40m of 4” temporary hose, into the client’s existing isolation valves on the flow/return pipework.
We provided a 25m, three phase 32 amp lead which was connected into a commando socket located in the building, powering our BMS system and twin pumpset within our temporary plant room. The 4500l bunded fuel tank was then linked into the burner with a fuel line, and the engineers began the commissioning process. Following commissioning the team back at HQ confirmed temperature set points through the BMS and signed off the installation as complete.
Our temporary boiler was onsite for a total of 12 weeks to support the replacement project within the main plant room.
